Increasing Welfare through User Involvement

Gain a new international perspective on welfare – join the module from 13 November 2017 to 30 January 2018.

Duration is 10 weeks with possible extension of up to 3 months. The extended period can be placed as a “pre-course” or an “after-course” (more information see below)

The course is equivalent to 15-20 ECTS.

Content

The course will focus on values, theories and practices aimed at supporting people to develop their full potential and enrich their lives through user and citizen involvement.

In the field of welfare services, we will work with the conditions for democratic and transparent public services. Services can be pre-school institutions, schools, special institutions, shelters etc. Services can be publicly or privately organised and must be able to handle the complexities of the late modern society.

The target group of citizens can be all kinds, but the priority will be on groups such as vulnerable children, youth, marginalised adults or different minority-groups. Whether you want to manage projects from ideas, through planning, financing and implementation, or you are committed to support each individual and want to work directly with children or adults with special needs, the  goal is to discover and realise a better life by empowering and involving each person in all relevant decisions.

You will gain new professional knowledge and skills in a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary context. The module will also address the tension that occurs when the professionals, citizens and users come together in practice.

Learning goals

Students will acquire knowledge of :

  • Values, theories and practices in the framework of the welfare state and it’s institutions
  • Administrative procedure and the organisational and financial framework
  • How to gather data on user involvement of marginalised groups.

Skills in:

  • Working holistically and interdisciplinary
  • Applying relevant methods for carrying out work together with children, youth and the elderly
  • Applying relevant methods for carrying out work together with marginalised groups
  • Applying and managing projects.

Competencies in:

  • Working with user involvement and analysing the dilemmas of user involvement of marginalised groups.
  • Work with different ways of inter-professional / interdisciplinary approaches and renew traditional methods

Methods

We will work together with a group of collaborators on examples / cases – national, cross-national or international – and together find or develop strategies for education, social work, social medicine (engaged or assertive citizenship with origins in both User Involvement and Human Rights).

What are the demands of these strategies to public (or privately organized) services? What is the role of democracy and transparency if the wish is to involve citizens in the solutions of complex tasks in the late modern society? How can we create projects from ideas, through planning, financing and implementation?

The 10 week program is based on teamwork where students work in groups on a written assignment, pursuant to which examinations are held as an individual or group examination.

Target group of students

This module is designed for students who want to study and work with different minority-groups and work with different ways of inter-professional / interdisciplinary approaches. The course is offered jointly by both the Department of Social Work and the Department of Public Administration in Odense, Denmark.

Students can participate as follows:

  • 10 weeks stay in Odense, including examination
  • 10 weeks stay in Odense and subsequently a 2- 6 weeks study in Odense or in own educational institution, including examination (in cooperation with UCL)
  • 2-6 weeks preparatory study in own educational institution or in Odense followed by 10 weeks stay in Odense, including examination
  • Or the student can take the course virtually from their home country over 10 weeks.

The 2-6 weeks before or after the 10 week program will be agreed upon on an individual basis.

Application Deadlines for the Autumn Semester 2017

The deadline is 1 May. You apply trough the MoveOn system here.

We are not able to make exceptions to this deadline, as we cannot influence the visa application process which all non-EU citizens must complete.

Tuition and Fees – only for students outside the EU

The total tuition and fees for the course will be approximately EUR 1,830. This amount covers all tuition and fees, but does not include books and other materials, which you will need to pay for during your stay.

The tuition fee also does not cover the residence permit application fee, which you will need to pay to the Danish Immigration Services and to the Representation where you apply for the permit.

Students outside the EU, who require a student residence permit must pay the full amount before applying for the student permit.

Scholarship

If you are a non-EU/EEA or Switzerland citizen, you can apply for a scholarship to cover tuition fee and living expenses. Click here for more information.
